Due to Hurricane Ike, the offices and collections of the Galveston County Historical Museum and the Galveston County Historical Commission have moved to the Shearn Moody Plaza building at 25th and Strand, Suite 4157. Although the museum currently has no exhibitions for the public to view, we are open to accept donations to our historical artifact collection and to assist with research and other inquiries.

We have recently launched a new educational outreach program entitled History at Your Doorstep. Please see our Education page for more information about how a the museum can visit your classroom. We are bringing local history to children around the county when they cannot come visit the museum.

During our rebuilding phase, you can still view the museum’s collection through our publication entitled Galveston: A City on Stilts, and through our outreach exhibits at the Galveston County Courthouse at 722 Moody in Galveston.

Museum Director Jodi Wright Gidley and Curator Jennifer Marines are co-authors of Galveston: A City on Stilts. The book features photographs from the museum’s collection taken by Zeva B. Edworthy from about 1902 to 1912. During this period, the town was still recovering from the devastating 1900 Storm. The photographs depict the building of the seawall and the causeway, as well as the grade-raising project. Additionally, Edworthy photographed fun scenes around town like people playing at the beach, riding a roller coaster at the Electric Park, or posing in front of Ball High School. The book also includes a preface by the photographer’s daughter Judith Edworthy Wray and a conclusion with a modern perspective by hurricane specialist and historian Lew Fincher.
